Mm Mm Musicals

I’ve been listening to a lot of musicals for the past two months, thanks to John Lilly though he doesn’t know it. One day at the Mozilla offices I accidentally started listening to a musical that he had on his shared iTunes and I loved it.

So far my favorite three musicals, in order, are Annie, Hair, and Rent. Hair was my most recent discovery, fantastic. I’m ready to get another, anybody have a recommendation?

  1. I fully enjoyed Avenue Q when it was playing in London, but it also spent a long time on Broadway. It’s aimed at mature audiences but some of the songs are hilarious – you may well have heard the song “The Internet Is For Porn” which is taken from it.

In a similar vein is the Rocky Horror Show, and Jerry Springer: The Opera (which is full of swearing but massively amusing).

Other less silly musicals that I’ve liked are “Kiss Me Kate” and “Fiddler On The Roof”.

  2. Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat! By far my favorite and the most addicting. I’ll look around for my old tape of it for you. I had it memorized when I was a kid, and then again in highschool. A nerdy friend of mine and I used to enjoy sitting around and singing the entire thing from beginning to end without the music. An impressive site.

Also any song from a disney movie is a great one to pull out to impress the ladies. A wedding a year ago had the similar theme as Nate’s where you had to stand up and sing a song about love to get them to kiss. Nate and Andy went up and sang two choruses of “Can you feel the love tonight”. Andy was Simba and Nate broke into the falsetto representing Nala.
